Satay Kajang Retro

You do not need to go as far as Kajang to pacify your craving for satay as there is a satay stall worth visiting in Medan Selera USJ 7, in Subang jaya.

Sate Kajang Retro owner Muhammad Hairudin Suwardi said he skewered and seasoned the meat himself so patrons are guaranteed a homemade taste when they order his satay.

Hairuddin, who hails from Kajang, said he used his grandfather’s recipe to marinate the meat. Interestingly, instead of glazing the satay with vegetable oil like most satay sellers, he glazed the meat with the marinade.

This also means that is less oily, and as Hairudin said, also full of flavour.

We tried the chicken and beef satay as the stall ran out of lamb (RMLZU per stick) and ox tripe (RM1 per stick) due to orders for Hari Raya. proving that Sate Kajang Retro is a hit

among Subang Jaya folk. 

The Chicken satay (70 Sen per stick) was cooked to perfection and the beef satay (also 70sen per stick) was tender and slid off the stick easily.

At such prices. we can say the satay is cheap­ and tasty.

What is also important is the peanut gravy. At Sate Kajang Retro, the gravy was so thick that it stuck to the meat when dipped into it.

Sate Kajang Retro also sells ketupat at 70sen per piece to go with the skewered meat.

Kamaruddin Satay (Capital Cafe)

Not manysatay stalls can boast that are over 50 years old. Kamaruddin Satay at the Capital Café on Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman was started by Kamaruddin Parmini's father in the 19605.

It was passed down to Kamaruddin, and later on, to his Ramli Jusos.

When the stall opens for business at about 5pm, Ramli does brisk business to cater to the crowd, some of whom join the queue for takeaways.

The stall sells only two types of samy' beef and chicken - served with homemade peanut sauce. and nasi impit.

If you ask, Ramli will always recommend the beef satay. “It is the best-seller here.”

Ramli plies his trade from a crude charcoal grill placed beside the pedestrian walk, at the front of the colonial-era building.

Capital Café was opened in 1956, and seems that not much has changed since, save

for a new coat of paint on the front façade.

The satay is still made from the same Javanese recipes passed down three generations. They still appear to please many KL folk.

Ramli said he could sell 1,500 skewers of _satay in the three hours.

The beef satay uses chunks of Indian beef.` The meat is marinated in a mixture that includes lemongrass, garlic, onion, ginger and salt.

“lt is more or less the same for the chicken' but l add sautéed chilli paste to the marinade,” he said.

The fragrant aroma of barbecued meat. I permeated through the air as we entered the shop.

Both the beef and chicken satay were' tender, and the satay sauce was a and smooth peanut sauce with a balanced taste.

The little chunks of fat pushed into skewers in between the meat on the skewer;` enhanced the taste further.

Tham Wah Wan Temple (Than Hsiang KL & SDE) was co-founded by the four late Dharma brothers “Xu Yue Zhi”, “Cai Hong Qing”, “Koh Ben Ming” and “Wu Yi Hua”. The temple was built by Master “Ping Xian”, together with Dharma brothers “Wong Pin Zheng” and “Teoh Pu Liang”.

In August 1993, Venerable Master Wei Wu was on a Buddhist propagation mission road show to “Fo Zhong” on a theme “Rediscover the Love that is Lost”. During the Dharma talk, Master Wei Wu proves his compassion in action by making a commitment to establish a series of welfare activities which are to be promoted in Kuala Lumpur for the people who requested for it.

The very next day, a group of Buddhist fellowship journeyed to the Thang Siang Foundation for a meeting with Ven Wei Wu. They immediately establish a committee comprising a group of 9 members. It was led by the Penang Welfare team leader, Dharma sister “Mei Er”. After a series of discussions and brainstorming the committee formulated a programme which was to be started as welfare activities in Kuala Lumpur.

In the beginning when the welfare programmes were in the stage of planning, several Buddhist members and Dharma brother “Xu Yue Zhi” established a friendship with Venerable Master Wei Wu . Buddhist members felt grateful to the Venerable for lending the premises to them. In return the Buddhist members contributed their effort to organise other activities at the Tham Wah Wan Temple. Under leadership of the capable Venerable Zhen Xin they started cleaning up the temple and maintaining the compound.

 The positive contribution shown by the Buddhists members and the adherence to the philosophy and conviction of the Than Hsiang Foundation the temple activities increases. The responsibilities of the temple was shouldered by Venerable Master Wei Wu. On the 2nd. of September, 1997, an official opening ceremony was held. After this ceremony a series of activities were organised. All the activities were based on the four principles of Than Hsiang Foundation called the Than Hsiang Conviction, that is for “The young to learn, the strong and healthy to serve, the aged and sick to be cared for and the departed to find spiritual destination”. Welfare activities got a strong foot hold in the community. Activities such as volunteering to help at old folks homes, free "hotline" telephone counselling and consultation on welfare, organised Dharma talks, youth Buddhist camps, training for Buddhist volunteers and English and Chinses Dharma classes were organised on a regular basis.

These activities establishes loving kindness in the community and opportunity for fellow Buddhist to practice the Buddha’s teachings and thus reaping the merits of cultivating wisdom and virtues.
